WHY I’M RUNNING
Courage, Competence, and Community-Centered Leadership
Candace Tiana Nelson
Democrat for DC Council At-Large
I am running for the DC Council because too many of us work hard, try to do everything right, and still feel invisible, left behind, or unheard. Our families are facing major challenges finding affordable housing, feeling safe, and getting ahead while navigating systems that often fail us. The choices we make in the upcoming election are critical to change that direction, and to uplift our communities across the District.
Growing up in Winchester, Virginia, I was not represented by people who looked like me or shared my values. That experience shaped my commitment to serve, and to lead with humanity, courage, dignity, integrity, and perseverance. It led to a career as a lifelong public servant and advocate in DC, amplifying our voices and highlighting our values at every desk or table, in every conference room or office, during each meeting I attended throughout my career.
