Join Us on a Canvass of Your Neighborhood
Dear Friend,
There are 30 days to go before ballots start to be mailed out. Going out to meet residents is more crucial than ever and I hope you'll get involved to help us canvass your neighborhood!
From Monday to today, the week has been full of events and opportunities for me to share my vision for DC. The Capital Stonewall Democrats hosted an At-Large Candidate forum on Monday. I was able to share my thoughts on how the Trump administration is attacking members of the LGBTQ+ community, but we didn't have time to talk about the intersectionality with immigration, and the compounded attacks members of both communities are facing with little to no focused support.
What comes to mind when you hear the word “immigrant” right now? Unfortunately, I’ve seen how the term is getting swept away from reality. Many of our neighbors who are immigrants are naturalized U.S. citizens, permanent residents, have long-term visas, temporary protected status (TPS), or other legal right to be in the U.S. I make this distinction so we can be clear about who we’re going to protect and our approach to defend each of these groups regardless.
Locally, I want to see our Sanctuary Values Amendment Act of 2020 be strengthened and clearly delineate that MPD cannot be part of immigration enforcement efforts. Full stop. Several current Councilmembers have already publicly stated that they would not vote in support of the interim Chief and I would align myself with that group unless we have their word and revocation of MPD Executive Order EO-25-005 related to immigration enforcement. MPD’s cooperation is eroding trust that took years to build, and was building, with communities across the city.
We also have a big information gap among residents who don’t know they are able to vote in local elections if they’re permanent residents. We must do more to share that information and bring them into our local democratic process. Bringing more people into the process increases their agency and we want to make sure people know they have a vote at the local level to elect people who will find solutions to their problems and solve them.
Let's continue to be part of the progress in DC. Join my campaign at an upcoming canvass by signing up here or check out one of these events:

We also just submitted our latest Office of Campaign Finance report. I'm excited to share that a majority, nearly 80%, of our donors are DC residents. This means we are powered and funded by friends and neighbors just like you from across the city. Whether it's running into each other at events or at the grocery store, we know that local support is key and I'm grateful to have yours more than ever.
